  • Broadband and Wide-Angle Absorber: An absorber using 3D frequency selective surfaces (FSS) was presented. It achieves broadband and wide incident-angle absorption characteristics by combining horizontal and vertical FSSs. The absorption bandwidth of conventional planar FSSs shrinks as the angle of incidence increases, with TM waves having a more severe bandwidth reduction than TE waves. The incorporation of a carefully designed vertical FSS can reduce the impedance mismatch and extend the absorber’s absorption bandwidth at both TE and TM waves with a large incident angle. The absorber has a total thickness of only 12.4 mm (0.118 λL at the lowest operation frequency) and has a periodic size of 16 mm (0.152 λL). Its -10dB bandwidth ranges from 2.85 GHz to 6.62 GHz (bandwidth ratio 2.32:1) at normal incidence. Furthermore, when the incident angle for both TE and TM waves is increased from 0° to 60°, the presented absorber well maintains its absorption at 3.14 ~ 6.62 GHz (bandwidth ratio 2.11:1).
